Energy bill hits road bump in Senate

By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer Fri Dec 7, 2007 5:56 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats searched for a compromise on energy legislation as

Republican leaders

made clear Friday

they will oppose oil industry taxes

and a mandatefor utilities to use more wind and

solar-generated electricity.

With Washington, D.C., missing in action, governors including Florida's Charlie Crist, and even local leaders such as Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty and Orlando Mayor buddy Dyer, have come forward.

  It comes down to this,

we need to get two Senate Republicans

that voted

against the tax title in June

to vote in favor of the energy bill later this week

  Specifically we need Senator Martinez

to vote in support of the energy bill.

I need you to marshal as many troops as possible to call Senator Martinez and ask him to vote in favor of the energy bill.

This bill contains the best provisions for solar ever introduced in Congress

and we cannot let it die by one or two votes.

Please call his office in Washington

and ask to speak with John Little, his Chief of Staff
202-224-3041

Talking points:

  1.  I live in Florida and I vote
  2. I support the shift of tax incentives from the oil industry to the renewable energy industry
  3. The energy bill currently being debated will create thousands of jobs and billions of dollars of economic investment in Florida
  4. The energy bill will help improve our energy independence and lower costs for consumers
  5. It is critical for Senator Martinez to vote in favor of the energy bill
  6. Will Senate Martinez be voting in favor of the bill?

House seeks tax incentives for renewable energy

By Chris Baltimore Tue Dec 4, 12:21 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats in the House of Representatives want to include provisions in pending energy legislation

that would strip about $21 billion in tax subsidies from oil and gas companies

and put them toward subsidies for renewable energy sources

like wind and solar.

Lessons from The Political Process ( a good read)

One thing you learn in Washington, D.C., is that politics is never predictable.

The Interior Department is under fire for other problems in the royalty program as well.

It is struggling without much success to correct leasing mistakes

that could allow oil companies

to escape $10 billion in royalties

over the next decade or so.

''There's hundreds of millions of dollars, billions of dollars out there,

and I don't think we should be scared of the oil companies,''

said Bobby L. Maxwell,

as a private citizen,

sued the Kerr-McGee Corporation,

After a nine year career as an aide in the US Senate and over 25 years as a registered renewable energy lobbyist,

I am still always amazed at the machinations and changes of course in the legislative arena.

This year just typifies the mercurial nature of the legislative process.

We all know,

that the tax incentives are what drives investment

into these portfolio of clean energy industries —

both to companies and projects.

Loss of the credits or even just a small extension could be devastating.
